Fourteen holes immediately overlook the shore where the warm Gulf Stream first touch land on this side of the Atlantic, Fuchsias abound, and there are splendid panoramic views across the sea and islands to the Beara Mountains, Sheep\'s Head and the Mizen Peninsula.\r\n\r\nCourse architects Eddie Hackett and Christy O\'Connor Jnr., of Ryder Cup fame, in keeping with USGA standards, have adapted some 170 acres of picturesquely undulating scenery - even the six lakes and other hazards would charm a landscape artist.\r\n\r\nThey have created a course on which the scratch golfer must thoughtfully exert himself to achieve Par 71, while the Handicap golfer, too, has fair chance of glory. Great variety, from a Par 3 of a mere 126 meters to a Par 5 of 487 meters to a two-tier green, demands skilful versatility.\r\n\r\nFounded in 1975, Bantry Bay is a cosmopolitan club, with more than a hundred members from abroad. Categories include Overseas Life Membership. The Clubhouse Bar and restaurant are noted for their friendly informality.\r\n\r\nWhen not playing golf, visitors can enjoy various other local amenities and recreations - Bantry House and its Armada Centre, the Italian Gardens on Garnish Island, scenic drives, swimming from sandy beaches, sailing, diving, pony trekking, sea and fresh-water fishing...\r\n\r\nThere are excellent hotels, guest houses and restaurants close to the Club. There are 17 other golf courses within 150km of Bantry, which include Cork Golf Club, The Old Head Links at Kinsale, Killarney and Ballybunion.

If you sail - take time out to visit the many interesting inlets and islands in Bantry Bay. Visit the world famous Glengarriff Harbour and Garnish Island Itallian Gardens. Keep your eye on the wind direction and strength or you may have to walk home :-) This cat does not sport an engine.
Located in the sheltered harbour of Glengarriff in Bantry Bay, in Southwest Ireland, Ilnacullin is a small island of 15 hectares (37 acres) known to horticulturists and lovers of trees and shrubs all around the world as an island garden of rare beauty. The gardens of Ilnacullin owe their existence to the creative partnership, some seventy years ago, of Anna Bryce, then owner of the island and Harold Peto, architect and garden designer. The island was bequeathed to the Irish people in 1953, and was subsequently entrusted to the care of the Commissioners of Public Works. To-day management of the island is in the hands of the Office of Public Works.\r\n\r\nThe island is named Garnish (the near island) on official Ordnance Survey Maps and is widely known by that name. The alternative name Ilnacullin or Illaunacullin (island of holly) also has a long history in the locality, and appears on at least one early map; it may in fact be the older name for the island. As there is another island garden called Garnish not far away in County Kerry, there is much to be said for using the distinctive name Ilnacullin for the island garden at Glengarriff, County Cork, and this has been the practice of the Office of Public Works for some years now.\r\n\r\nVisiting the Island\r\n\r\nThe island is open to visitors each day from 1st March to 31st October. During the winter months, from November to February, it is closed to visitors except by special arrangement. Ilnacullin is reached from Glengarriff by privately operated boats. A charge for admission to Ilnacullin is made by the Office of Public Works on arrival at the island. This charge is quite separate from the fares collected by boat owners.\r\n\r\nIlnacullin is renowned for its richness of plant form and colour, changing continuously with the seasons. The vivid colours of Rhododendrons and Azaleas reach their peak during May and June, whilst the hundreds of cultivars of climbing plants, herbaceous perennials and choice shrubs dominate the midsummer period from June to August. Autumn colour, particularly on the magnificent heather bank, is rich during the usually mild early autumn months of September and October. \r\n\r\nBecause of its sheltered situation and the warming oceanic influence of the Gulf Stream the climate is in some respect almost subtropical, and is favourable to the growth of ornamental plants from many parts of the world. Winters are mild, and frosts are light and of short duration. \r\n\r\nAverage rainfall and humidity levels are high, the mean annual rainfall being 1850 mm (73 inches) with annual totals as high as 2540 mm (100 inches) on record.Seals basking\r\n\r\nEven for those who are not particularly interested in gardens, Ilnacullin is an attractive place to visit. There are many attractive views of the scenery of the surrounding district from the island. Ilnacullin and its surrounding waters are quite rich in wildlife, the seals which frequent the rocks on the southern shore being of particular interest to many visitors.\r\n\r\n

"The Moorings" sits directly on Bantry Bay and is set in a hectare of lawns, surrounded on three sides by Bantry Bay Golf Course, and on the other by its own beach.
Located three miles from Bantry Town on the Glengarriff road close to good restaurants, pubs and shops, it is ideal for boating, fishing, golf, pitch and putt, hill walking, touring West Cork and Kerry. Three minutes walk to the golf clubhouse with its well appointed restaurant and bar.
Bantry, in the heart of West Cork, is a region of lush vegetation, palm trees
and semi-tropical flowers. Hemmed in by high mountain ridges, an azure blue sea and cascading mountain streams, it is a place of unparalled beauty where the landscape changes with every mood of wind and sky. In the breathtaking splendour of mountain scenery, hilly pastures, meandering streams, lakes and woods, where megalithic monuments and ruins of monastic settlements dot the country-side, visitors can find peace and tranquility.
The landscape is mountainous with parallel ridges running through the various peninsulae to the sea - mainly in an north-east/south-west direction. The rest of the terrain is occupied by valleys, hidden glens, hills, fast running rivers, woods and forests.
The Bantry region is divided into three main areas corresponding with the peninsulas i. e. The Beara Peninsula, The Sheep's Head or in Irish (Muintir Bhaire) Peninsula and The Mizen Peninsula. These extend south-west in the Atlantic up to 30 miles.
Touring routes are numerous and include the breathtaking scenery of the coastal routes around each of the peninsulas, spectacular winding roads through the mountains, cliff-face roadways, and the unrivalled vistas of mountain lakes, waterfalls, fast running rivers, prehistoric monuments, ancient castles and Christian settlements, forts and stately homes with their majestic gardens.
The Bantry and West Cork character is considered the most friendly, helpful, outgoing, quick witted, generous and possessing the gift of unlimited conversation with a great sense of humour. West Cork is recognised as one of the last bastions of true Irish hospitality. You are assured a warm welcome.
Bantry is a well known tourist centre with many attractions such as Bantry House. Travelling from Cork (allow 1. 5hrs) take the N71 via Innishannon to Bandon, from there take the R586 via Dunmanway, this road rejoins the N71, 5 miles / 7 km outside Bantry, drive through Bantry town square and Bantry Bay golf club is 1. 5 miles / 2 km north on the N71 direction Killarney. From Killarney (allow 1. 25hrs) take the N71 via Kenmare and Glengarriff to Bantry.

De mensen
Jerry and Veronica are recently retired professionals. Our hobbies are travel, gardening, sailing, reading and computing. Our family of three have flown the coop but may travel with us on occasions, most likely we will travel alone. Our travels in the last two years have taken us to Venice, Florence, Lucca, Bratislava, Vienna,Berlin, London, Paris and the south of France.
So far we have had wonderful home exchange experiences except for one disappointment in Paris. We look forward to many more years of adventure with home-exchange and to making lots of new friends. We are open to offers anywhere in the world.
