Our house, which we hope will be your home-away-from-home, is a rather typical Danish house in two stories, built 20 years ago in the Hvinningdal area on the outskirts of Silkeborg, a small city in the heart of Jutland. It is “hyggelig” (Danish for nice and cosy) and practical. We have recently added an extension to the house to give us even more space.

Downstairs the house has a large living/dining room full of light, a large kitchen (equipped with dishwasher, microwave, stereo (cooking definitely improves with a bit of disco), a utility room with washer and drier, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

Upstairs you'll find 3 bedrooms (1 double and 2 single), a large TV room (which could also be used as a bedroom) with a super view, and a bathroom.
Many of the bedrooms have TVs, and we have cable TV with about 40 channels). The upstairs TV room also has WII, Playstation2, lots of films, and lots of board-games. We also have toys for all age-groups – any Barbie or Lego fans? - and we can supply baby equipment if needed. There is wireless Internet access all over the house and we will leave you at least one computer as well as a printer.

Outside is a nice green garden with a large wooden patio with a bbq, a lovely little garden house to play or sleep in, an oldfashioned Swedish double swing seat, a hammock and a bonfire area where you can cook over an open fire.

We live in a quiet street (with its own little playground and football field) in a residential area about 4 km from the city centre, 3 min. walk from the woods, 3 min. walk from the busstop (to city centre and railway station), 10 min. walk from a supermarket. Silkeborg is situated in the middle of the Danish lake district, an area of great beauty with lots of forests and lakes. So in a few minutes you can be in the middle of the forest, go for long walks, have a picnic or swim in the lakes (some of our friends do it all year round!).

Silkeborg has several interesting museums (one of them housing the famous 2400 year-old Tollundman, the world's best preserved bog man), a new art center at the old spa, a freshwater aquarium. And you can go fishing (excellent fishing waters – very clean), canoeing, grass skiing, swimming (indoors too) and play golf.

Denmark is so small that you can see an awful lot of the country in one holiday. Among our own favourite outings are a cruise on the old paddle steamer on the lakes to look-out point Himmelbjerget, a walk in one of the many woods around one of the lakes here, Legoland (60 min.) (every child should take their parents there at least once! ), Århus (40 min.)(recently voted best shopping city in Scandinavia, museums – e.g. The Old City, a five-star live open-air museum, and Aros, the impressive new art museum), Hjerl Hede (60 min. – another delightful open-air museum which comes alive during holidays) , North Sea beaches (75 min.), Odense (2 hours by car, birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, shopping, zoo etc. ), and even Copenhagen (3 hours by car or train) with Tivoli, the Queen's Palace, and lots of shopping, is also reachable on day outings.
We will leave a big pile of brochures, maps etc. for you as well as suggestions for tours and activities.

For most European destinations we would prefer to go in our own car, but for overseas we'd like to exchange cars. We have an old reliable Citroen Berlingo with a manual gearshift that seats 5 or 6. We also have a smaller car which may be available as well. We have exchanged cars several times before, and our insurance covers all licensed drivers.
Also available are five bicycles.
If you need baby equipment like a car seat, crib etc. we can easily arrange that.
No pets - just a few neglected houseplants. But we don't mind feeding your fish!

Most Danes speak quite a lot of English and are friendly and welcoming to tourists. We can arrange for someone to welcome you to Silkeborg and introduce you to our home, if you would like that.

We are a family of homeexchange lovers! We love travelling, seeing the world, and learning about other countries, their cultures - and their food!. We have exchanged many times in Europe and the States - and we would love to go to your home too!

We are: Ole, 52, a sourcing manager for a company producing lighting for the entertainment industry, Annemette, 50, teaches English to business people, (we are both interested in literature, history, cooking, and the world around us), Johanne, 20, has just left home but might still travel with us together with her boyfriend occasionally, Marie, 17, hardworking highschool student, who stocks the shelves of the local supermarket, loves shopping, music, films, books and her friends, and Philip, 15, a school boy who can talk to anyone in Nintendoish and WIIish, and who loves anything that is square and you can sit in front of! The children are well-behaved, take good care of their own things as well as those of other people, and are used to travelling and meeting other cultures - and all speak good English. Together we like to explore new places - both landscapes and cityscapes, and go to museums and other interesting places - like shops! - well the boys probably prefer war museums... :-), and – relax with a book or a film.
